A snowfall warning remains in effect for nearly all of southern Manitoba.

Justin Shelley with Environment Canada says the southeastern corner of the province, including Steinbach and Winnipeg should get between five and 15 centimetres of snow on Wednesday.

In Steinbach, the snow started falling shortly after noon. Shelley says some portions of southern Manitoba could get up to 20 centimetres of snow with this system.

"With this type of system, we're seeing some heavier bands of precipitation form and under those bands are where we are expecting those heaviest snowfall totals to add up," explains Shelley.

He notes the heavier bands are expected to remain in the region until late Wednesday evening when the snow will begin to taper off.

"We might start to see some lighter snow or some scattered flurries on the back side of this system overnight before it fully clears out by (Thursday) morning," adds Shelley.

According to Shelley, the hardest hit areas will be to the north and west of Winnipeg. He notes places like Brandon, Portage la Prairie and the southern Interlake region could see 15 to 20 centimetres of the white stuff.

As for the winds, those are gradually picking up as well. As of Wednesday, at 4 pm, winds in Steinbach are from the east at 30-47 kilometres per hour. Shelley says wind speeds in Steinbach and Winnipeg should peak at 50 km/h (Wednesday) evening. In areas further west, including Brandon, wind speeds of 70 km/h have already been registered.

"While we aren't going to see quite as strong winds further east, with the intense snow bands moving through the area we'll certainly see some reductions to visibility in both falling and possibly locally blowing snow through the region," he says.

Meanwhile, Shelley says aside from the snowfall warning, it does not appear likely that any additional warnings will be issued for southeastern Manitoba on Wednesday. He notes conditions will improve overnight, though it is expected to remain colder than normal until the weekend. The normal high for this time of year is -3 degrees.
