A shed burned to the ground Sunday morning in Steinbach and now RCMP are trying to determine who might have started it.

Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says his department was called out early Sunday morning at around 4:42 am. The 911 page was for a shed fire along Fairway Close, which is just east of the Fly-in Golf Course.

"When we arrived, there was a shed that was fully involved," reports Toews.

He suggests it was a garden shed, probably about 120 square feet in size that had all but crumbled by the time they were able to assist.

"The shed fire had also ignited a pickup truck, which was parked in the driveway, close to the shed," adds Toews. "So that was also involved when we arrived."

According to Toews the fire also damaged some other contents that were nearby on that yard, including a hot tub and trampoline. He says thankfully the nearest wall of the house has a brick face, preventing it from igniting. He suggests damage to the home was probably only cosmetic.

Toews does not have a damage estimate, noting there was not a lot in the shed that burned. He also does not have an exact cause.

"It's a suspicious fire," reports Toews.

He notes there was no hydro to the shed and nothing inside the building that could have started the blaze.

"If anyone noticed anything suspicious around that time or a bit earlier in the neighbourhood, contact the police," he urges.

The 911 call was made by the homeowner. Crews were on scene for about ninety minutes.
