The Steinbach RCMP community constable is reminding residents that school speed zones remain in effect through the spring break.

Constable Dennis Redekop says school speed zones in Steinbach and the Hanover School Division are in effect from September to June without exception.

"It is for the safety of the kids and everybody around because there are still play structures outside and kids like to go to play structures even during holidays during the break. Since the weather is getting warmer there are going to be kids riding bikes, and going to be around school areas so school zones are still in effect even though there is no school."

Redekop says so far the school speed zones have been fairly effective at getting traffic to slow down.

"Sometimes there are going to be this one odd person that doesn’t see a sign where there is a school and blows the speed limit and we do get calls from schools advising us and giving us license plate numbers and we can follow up with that but for the most part I think it is effective."

Redekop reminds drivers to keep an eye on children as more and more kids are going outside as the weather warms up.
