Snow clearing crews have been up and at it here in Steinbach since 3 A.M.

Randy Reimer is the Head of Public Works for the City of Steinbach. He says his department had to shift gears as they had already put away most of the snow removal equipment and were well into the spring clean-up.

Reimer notes they are trying to get streets down to bare pavement as soon as possible to eliminate slippery conditions. That said, with warmer weather right around the corner, he notes snow clearing this time around won’t be as thorough as it would be in the middle of winter.

"We are putting a little bit of sand down at a couple of corners if they continue to shine up here throughout the day but other than that, we are just trying to plow as many of the main collector streets, the main downtown stuff and we got our sidewalk plows out. We will just try and do a minimal quick clean-up and we are not cleaning driveways this time around because the frost is out already."

With minimal snow all winter, Reimer says they were quite far under budget for snow clearing this past year but this most recent snowfall won't actually change that because it will fall under the 2021 budget.

Despite the snow being an inconvenience, Reimer says he is more than happy to see the much-needed precipitation which should help fields and lawns equally. He notes when they are done with their minimal snow clearing, they will wait for it all to melt and continue on with preparations for summer.
