It’s day one of the Provincial High School A-AA-AAA High School Soccer Championships. The girls are in Birtle. The Zone 13 champion Lorette Scorpions will face Neepawa in the quarterfinals. The boys are in Rossburn. The Zone 13 champion Niverville Panthers, who are the number one seed, will meet either Major Pratt/Rossburn or Frontier Mosakahiken in the quarterfinal. The Lorette Scorpions will take on the Morden Thunder.


The Winnipeg Jets play their season opener tonight against the New York Rangers at Canada Life Centre. Head coach Rick Bowness announced that Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey and Adam Lowry have been named alternate captains for the 2022-23 season.


Myrtle’s Wade Allison scored Philadelphia’s first goal of the season Thursday night as the Flyers won their home opener 5-2 over New Jersey.


Philadelphia defenseman Travis Sanheim has signed an eight-year $50 million dollar contract. The 26-year-old Elkhorn native was scheduled to reach unrestricted free agency next summer. Sanheim was selected 17th overall by the Flyers in the 2014 NHL Draft.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released American defensive back J.T. Hassell. The 14-2 Blue Bombers face the B.C. Lions in Vancouver Saturday night. Winnipeg has clinched first place in the West and earned a bye to the division final.
