Rylan Penner scored 4:18 into double overtime to lift the Steinbach Huskies past the Springfield Xtreme 2-1 at the T.G. Smith Arena in game one of the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven final. Keyan Grimard also scored for the Huskies. Sam Sass had the lone goal for the Xtreme. Steinbach netminder Brandon Palmer made 41 saves while Springfield’s Dylan Kizlik stopped 54 shots. Game two goes Saturday night in Oakbank.


Kirk Mullen, James Fuchs and Samuel Noad did the goal scoring and Beck Liden made 23 saves in recording the shutout as the Pistons blanked the Winnipeg Blues 3-0. The defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions have five games left and lead the Winkler Flyers by eight points in the race for first place in the East Division. The Flyers do have two games in hand.


The Eastman Selects 2023-24 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season will be on the line Tuesday night in Brandon. The Selects lost 7-0 to the Wheat Kings Sunday at the SunGro Centre in Beausejour. Brady Turko scored twice and Burke Hood made 33 saves in recording the shutout for the visitors who lead the best-of-five quarterfinal two games to none.


The Winnipeg Jets wrapped up their three-game road trip with a 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Nino Niederreiter, Josh Morrissey, Morgan Barron, Vladislav Namestnikov and Sean Monahan did the goal scoring for the Jets who trailed 2-1 after forty minutes. Laurent Brossoit made 18 saves in net for Winnipeg. The Jets (39-17-5) are tied with Dallas for first place in the NHL’s Central Division standings. Winnipeg has three games in hand on the Stars. The Jets host the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.


Axel Jonsson-Fjallby had two goals and an assist and Collin Delia stopped 30 shots as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Texas Stars 6-2 at Canada Life Centre.


Maddie Ronney made 29 saves in recording the shutout as Minnesota blanked New York 2-0 in the lone PWHL game. Elm Creek’s Corinne Schroeder stopped 35 shots in net for New York.


Reid Carruthers has a 3-0 record and Matt Dunstone is 1-1 heading into day four of the Brier in Regina. Team Carruthers defeated Scott Howard on Ontario 7-6 in an extra end and Trevor Bonot of Northern Ontario 9-8. Dunstone downed Catlin Schneider of B.C. 8-5.
