The Eastman Selects are 4-0 to start the 2023-24 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season. Aston Cure, Calem Normandeau and Mario Gagnon scored two goals each and Nathan Forster chipped in with four helpers as Eastman defeated the Parkland Rangers 10-1 Sunday afternoon at Credit Union Place in Dauphin. Easton Gaffray, Calyb Moore, Luc DeGagne and Finley Titterson also scored for the Selects. Eastman netminder Samuel Fontaine made 31 saves.


Addison Tomes made 20 saves in the Eastman Selects 3-2 victory over the Central Plains Capitals in Niverville. Reese Beavis, Devyn Brown and Isabella Carriere did the goal scoring for the Selects who have two wins and an overtime loss to start the 2023-24 Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League season.


The Beausejour Comets lost 4-3 to the Lundar Falcons. Gavin Miller won it for the Falcons when he scored his second goal of the game in overtime. Evan Leeson, Jarvis Ewasko and Ryan Miller replied for the Comets.
 

Steinbach Regional captured the Sturgeon Heights Huskies Invitational junior varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Sabres defeated the host Huskies 25-20, 22-25, 17-15 in the final. The SRSS lost out to the Lord Selkirk Royals in the semifinals of the Mennonite Brethren varsity girls tournament. Gabrielle Roy won the Piper Classic varsity girls tournament. Les Roys swept host John Taylor 25-17, 25-18 in the final. The Green Valley Pirates beat the Lac du Bonnet Chargers 25-20, 25-9 in the final of the Falcon Invitational varsity girls tournament at Immanuel Christian. Gabrielle Roy swept Leo Remillard 25-22, 25-23 in the final of the Northlands Parkway Nighthawks junior varsity girls tournament in Winkler.


The Canadian men’s volleyball team will play in the Paris Olympics next summer. 12th ranked Canada (5-2) swept Mexico 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 Sunday and finished second in Pool C at the Olympic qualifying tournament in China. Steinbach’s Eric Loeppky lead the Canadian attack with 16 points and recorded one of Canada’s eight aces in the win over No. 34 Mexico. Poland (7-0) earned top spot with 18 points. Canada was next with 15. Argentina (5-2) finished in third place. The top two countries from each of the tournament’s three pools, Germany & Brazil, the United States & Japan along with Poland & Canada, advanced to the Paris Olympics. Canada lost in the quarterfinals at both the 2016 Games in Rio and Tokyo in 2020.
