Kobe Grant stopped 43 shots as the Swan Valley Stampeders defeated the Steinbach Pistons 3-2 Saturday night at the T.G. Smith Centre and won their second straight elimination game. Jakob Jones, Warren Marcotte and Steven Arp scored for the Stamps who cut the Pistons lead in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven semifinal to three games to two. Kirk Mullen and Ty Paisley replied for Steinbach. Game six goes Monday in Swan River.


The Moose Jaw Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Ice at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Brayden Yeager had two goals and an assist for the Warriors who evened the Western Hockey League’s best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal at a game apiece. Zack Ostapchuk, Connor McClennon and Carson Lartimer scored in the third period for the Ice. Josh Hoekstra potted an empty netter for the Warriors with three seconds left in regulation.


Canada will meet the United States in the gold medal game at the 2023 World Women’s Hockey Championship in Brampton, Ontario. Sarah Fillier had a hat trick and Natalie Spooner had three helpers as Canada defeated Switzerland 5-1. Jamie Lee Rattray and Rebecca Johnston also scored for the Canadians. Hilary Knight, Amanda Kessel and Tesse Janecke each scored twice as the United States downed Czechia 9-1 in the other semifinal.


Simon Lundmark scored the go-ahead goal at 8:01 of the first period as the Manitoba Moose shaded the Rockford IceHogs 3-2. Leon Gawanke with his 20th of the season and Greg Meireles also scored for the Moose who play their regular season finale Sunday against the Chicago Wolves.
