The Steinbach Regional hockey team's season is officially over. The Sabres, who were eliminated in the second round of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's Platinum Promotions Division playoffs by the St. Paul's Crusaders earlier this month, found out Wednesday they were not selected by the MHSAA for a wildcard game. The River East Kodiaks will face the Oak Park Raiders and the Sturgeon Heights Huskies will meet the Vincent Massey Trojans in the two wildcard games. The SRSS defeated Lord Selkirk in a wildcard game last year on their way to capturing the Provincial AAAA High School Hockey championship banner.

The Beausejour Comets have joined the St. Malo Warriors and Selkirk Fishermen in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League semifinals. Clint Thomas and Merrick Hurcul each had two goals and two assists as the Comets downed the Arborg Ice Dawgs 7-2 at the SunGro Centre and swept the best-of-five opening round series in three straight. Evan Leeson, Tanner Amos and Ryan Miller also scored for Beausejour.

Three Steinbach Pistons are Manitoba Junior Hockey League All-Stars. Leo Chambers and Noah Szabo are First Team All-Stars while Grady Hoffman is a Rookie Team All-Star. Niverville's Kaycee Coyle is a Second Team All-Star. Nathan Brown and Raiden LeGall of the Nighthawks are Rookie Team All-Stars.

Round two of the SEMHL playoffs got underway Wednesday night. Brenden Walker's power play goal 4:20 into overtime lifted the defending champion Ste. Anne Aces past Winkler 3-2. Jordan DePape and Tanner Harms also scored for the Aces. Remi Laurencelle and Aaron Lewadniuk replied for the visiting Royals. Jay Fehr scored the only goal of the game midway through the second period and Reed Peters made 45 saves in recording the shutout as the Morden Bombers blanked the Mercs 1-0 in Warren. Those were the first games in their respective best-of-five semifinals. Both series resume Saturday night in Winkler and Morden.

Gabby Hughes scored the go-ahead goal with 4:06 remaining as Ottawa downed New York 4-2 in the lone PWHL game. Lexie Adzija added an empty-netter with four seconds left in regulation.

Defender Shelina Zadorsky to help Canada blank Costa Rica 3-0 on Wednesday and remain perfect at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup with three wins and the top seeding heading into the weekend quarterfinals. Jordyn Huitema also scored for Canada, which led 2-0 after having 73 per cent possession in the first half at Houston's Shell Energy Stadium.
