Austin Friesen and Samuel Toews each hit two-run singles in the top of the seventh inning as the Carillon Sultans defeated the Manitoba Junior Baseball League leading St. James A's 7-3 Tuesday night at Optimist Park. Carillon starter Ryan Powers went five innings and allowed three hits and three earned runs while striking out six. Rylan Penner got the win in relief as he gave up just one hit, struck out two and walked two in the last two innings. The Sultans are 5-6 and will reach the midway point of the season tonight when they take on the St. Boniface Legionaires at Whittier Park. Carillon will be home team. The game was originally scheduled for A.D Penner Park in Steinbach but had to be moved due to a diamond conflict. 


The Carillon Sultans gave up five runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth and dropped a 10-4 decision to the West Winnipeg A's at A.D. Penner Park. Nathan Christiuk had three hits including a solo home run for the Sultans who saw their record fall to 4-2 in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League. Both Carillon losses this season have been to West Winnipeg. The A's are 5-0. The North Winnipeg Pirates are in top spot at 6-0. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes six-game losing streak came to an end Tuesday night at Shaw Park. The Fish scored six runs in the second inning and held on for a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Dogs. Winnipeg right fielder Max Murphy drilled his team leading seventh home run of the season in the second. Goldeyes third baseman Dayson Croes had a single and double and extended his hitting streak to 19 games. Croes is 32-79 (.405) with a homer and 16 rbi during his hitting streak.


The B.C. Lions have signed veteran running back Kienan LaFrance after he was released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The 32-year-old Winnipeg native had 91 yards on 18 carries and hauled in 14 receptions for 97 yards in 43 regular season games with the Riders. The Lions open the 2023 CFL season against the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium Thursday night.
