The Steinbach Regional Sabres have advanced to the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's Winnipeg Free Press Division semifinals.

Matthew Broesky and Owen Plett scored second period power play goals as the Sabres downed the visiting Shaftesbury Titans 4-2 Thursday afternoon at the T.G. Smtih Centre. The Sabres were coming off a disapointing 2-1 loss Wednesday, which forced the decisive game three.

"We talked about a few things, one of them being discipline," says head coach Lawney Penner.  "We took a lot of penalties Wednesday which gave them a lot of power plays and tired out a lot of our guys.  I was happy with how the guys responded to that, and the other things was getting shots through.  They do a good job of getting a lot of guys in the shooting area, and we were able to get shots through today."

SRSS took those words to heart, controlling the play for the first 30 minutes.

"It's a good confidence builder," Penner notes.  "We dictated the play for the first two periods, and it's a good confidence builder for the next series."

Scott Petkau and Mark Sobering also scored for the SRSS who received a 27-save performance from Matthew Penner.

This is the first time the Sabres second-year hockey program has won a playoff series.

The SRSS will face Sanford in the divisional semifinal which will begin Monday at the T.G. Smith Centre.
