Steinbach Regional Secondary School students made a significant medal haul Thursday at the Skills Manitoba competition in Winnipeg. Eleven of the 26 SRSS students who entered came home with medals including four gold, three silver and four bronze.

Business Education teacher Esther Penner says that's a great showing.

"Four gold medallists is on the higher end for us. Usually we come back with two or three. This year, four is amazing."

Peters says the strong showing indicates SRSS is on the mark with its vocational and business training.

"It tells me that we're doing a great job over here. Our students are learning skills, we're able to compete with other schools. It shows that we are definitely doing what the industry is expecting of our students to know when they are ready to enter the workforce and to compete."

Penner says she stays in contact with most of her students who have competed in Skills, after they graduate, and most of them are in the field that they trained and competed in.

Meanwhile, SRSS alumnus Zac Teetaert, who is now studying at Red River College, won gold for drafting in the post-secondary competition.
