Initial steps have been taken to close the dike at the north end of St. Adolphe. Ritchot Mayor Jackie Hunt says crews have built up the dike on either side of Provincial Road 200 so it can be closed on very short notice if needed.

"What will happen is, if need be, they will put a little berm over the top. It will still be drivable. I was down St Mary's Road, Highway #200, late Sunday night and the road is still very much clear. Always near the Richardson Road, there's water lapping up onto the shoulder and onto the southbound lane but we're in a good position right now. We're almost at crest and I think that, at the end of the day, it's just going to move through like a normal, mild flooding year."

The Red River is forecast to crest in the next day or two.

Meanwhile, Hunt says some homes between St. Adolphe and Winnipeg were cut off from road access when the floodway gates were raised last week but adds that's nothing new.

"We always have the same seven or eight roads go out, even in more mild years like this. Unfortunately for those residents, it's status quo, they're used to it. I know that some of their driveways are out and now they have to move to higher ground and may be boat from their properties to a road. But it's standard for them. I don't wish it on anybody but they know what they're doing and nothing exceptional has happened this year as far as flooding."
