The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce has not changed its position on Sunday shopping. Executive director Ben Dueck made that comment in response to a survey released earlier this week showing 60 per cent of residents support Sunday shopping. Dueck says the city does not have a bylaw on Sunday shopping so nothing has changed.

"As a chamber of commerce, we represent our members and the most recent information we have from our members is that they are happy with the way the Sunday shopping guidelines are here. And, they haven't been asking us to advocate for any change on that."

Dueck says if the city were to put through a Sunday shopping bylaw, it's hard to say how the chamber would respond, adding it's purely hypothetical at this point. As for the suggestion that Sunday shopping should be allowed because various religious groups celebrate the Sabbath on different days, Dueck says that is a provincial matter.

"That's a provincial law that has been enacted. The province has made that differentiation. The business community, at least at this point, hasn't found a reason to speak out against that, from our member's standpoint at least."
