The executive director of Southeast Helping Hands says they are running low on food supplies at the food bank. Hank Klassen says while the number of people who use the food bank is holding steady at about 1,250, donations are down this year. He says it is hard to know why.

Hank Klassen"I guess maybe people are just complacent, that things are all normal and things are good and will just chug along. But it just doesn't. Our pasta shelves are empty, our canned meat is empty, cereals are very, very low so we need help. Right now we are just tremendously low. If we don't get an influx of food, we'll have to cut back on our givings."

Klassen is hoping that people who attend the Pioneer Days Parade in Steinbach Friday will bring a non-perishable food item to help them out.

"If everybody would participate who comes to the parade, we would be tremendously happy. This year, we're going to also have a pail for you to donate money. So, if you forget to bring food, you can donate money. Hopefully, this will carry us over until the October drive."

Klassen adds 51 per cent of the food bank's clients are children.
