Thousands of residents were without power Wednesday morning after a severe thunderstorm swept through southern Manitoba overnight.

Manitoba Hydro Spokesperson Bruce Owen says the storm knocked out a number of key power lines.

"The issue is, with the lightning and rain earlier this morning, we had some wires go down, some trees on some lines and it affected a power line which runs from Letellier in the south, north into the Steinbach area and as a result, approximately 5,000 customers in your area saw an outage."

Owen says power was restored to most customers by 7:00 A.M. but Manitoba Hydro workers are still making repairs to ensure everyone is back up and running.
