Speeding statistics in Steinbach jumped drastically from 2022 to 2023.

In 2022, there were 155 cases of people found speeding, and in 2023 there were 328, which is an increase of 173.

Staff Sargent Guy Landreville says a lot of this is due to their dedicated traffic officer buckling down on speeders in Steinbach.

“And I will guarantee you that when you see the 2024 in comparison next year, that number will be even higher, so it's going to get even better. The member was doing a good job and I praise him for that, and the member that I have now will do a great job.”

He says he sees speeders very often.

“Just from what I'm seeing right now, it's an increase, and it's overdue, because I see a lot of it myself. If I'm driving my kids to school in the morning or I’m going home, the speeding that we see, the racing which has calmed down quite a bit, but we continuously see that.”

Mayor Earl Funk says the RCMP have been doing a great job.

“Especially the traffic officer, because being a business on Main Street, I've seen a huge reduction in the racing and the revving of cars, and just the noise that the guys that were coming to race, whoever they were, and the noise they were making, I've seen a vast reduction in that.”

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra says it’s great to see the difference thanks to the dedicated traffic officer, and notes they are getting far fewer complaints about racing on Main Street.

He asks if the racers have moved to any other locations in particular, which Landreville answers that it seems to be random now.

“Before, it was the dedicated area, and I think we've stomped that one into the ground pretty good. And we haven't really seen any other areas. We get the odd call, but it's not like, ‘okay, we can't go in front of your shop anymore, so we're going to go somewhere else.’ We haven't seen that, not to say that it won't happen, but right now we haven't seen anything like that.”
