Residents living near Kleefeld may notice some loud bangs in the coming weeks, that resemble a gunshot.

Riley McDonald with Manitoba Hydro says those noises are coming from the De Salaberry East Station along Highway 52. McDonald says they are using implosion sleeves to splice conductor or power lines together. There is a small charge that is placed on two power lines, which are then detonated in order to meld the two lines together.

"It makes a loud bang," says McDonald. "They are short, but we are going to be doing sporadically from this week until August."

McDonald says first you will hear a loud horn, followed by a loud bang.

This blasting is done Monday to Friday. McDonald says because of noise bylaws, they can not do this at night, otherwise you would see a small flame accompanying the blast. The work is between 8 am and 4 pm.

The noise can be heard from far away and McDonald says they usually notify any residents within a few kilometres of what will be happening.

"If you are hearing loud bang sounds in Kleefeld, pretty good chance that's the implosion sleeve," suggests McDonald.

The De Salaberry East Station is part of the St. Vital Transmission Complex. It is designed to take load from three other stations and spread it around. It is intended to improve reliability in the area. With construction vehicles in and around that site, motorists are asked to slow down and be careful around any road work happening there.
