A spokesperson for Manitoba Hydro has provided an explanation for the unique looking hydro pole on Steinbach's west edge. The pole is located north of Highway 52 and south of the Manitoba Public Insurance building.

In addition to its shape, one of its unique features is that it is a laminate pole. Bruce Owen explains that it is for one of the new 66 kV lines being built from the new De Salaberry Station to eliminate Hanover Station. He notes the reason a laminate pole of this size is being used is because it is a corner pole for the new line. Owen says a bigger corner pole like this one does not require anchoring with guy wires.

"If we used a normal pole, the guy anchors would be in the middle of Highway 52," says Owen. "And that would not be good."

The new line is expected to be in service by the end of April.

Erecting the new hydro pole in Steinbach

In 2020, a new transmission line from south Winnipeg to the RM of Hanover was put into service. Manitoba Hydro says it serves one of the fastest growing areas of the province.

The 41 kilometre, 230 kV transmission line runs from Manitoba Hydro's St. Vital Station to the De Salaberry East Station northwest of Kleefeld. The new line and station lessen the loads carried by three other electrical substations and improves reliability of electricity service in nearby communities. The project was completed in December 2020.

Construction on De Salaberry East Station began in September 2018 and work building the transmission line started in January 2020. The project also includes six new 66 kV lines to deliver power from De Salaberry East Station to surrounding communities.
