The Seine River School Division is making sure the provincial government knows that school divisions will need financial support if seatbelts on buses become mandatory.

Board Chair Wendy Bloomfield says she has heard it could cost between $10,000 and $20,000 to install seatbelts on each bus and she notes they do not want to be put in a position where they have to take all that money out of what is currently spent on student education.

Bloomfield says a resolution is going to be put forward at the upcoming Manitoba School Board's Association meeting in March to make sure they get support from the government.

"That's what the resolution is all about, to just say to the Minister of Education in Manitoba if this becomes a regulation that we have some support to help with that conversion."

The topic was brought up at last week's board meeting to get the message out to trustees that this could be coming down the line in the near future. For now, Bloomfield says the matter is currently in the hands of Transport Canada and feels that "Transport Canada is going to look at all the pros and cons and come up with the right solution for keeping kids safe."
