“A humongous gift”: Former Steinbach resident wins Calgary Stampede poster contest
A former Steinbach resident has earned one of the highest honours in western art circles — her work will be featured on the official poster for the 2026 Calgary Stampede. Artist Dayna Loepp, who grew up on the outskirts of Steinbach and now lives in Calgary, says the experience has been “mind-boggling.” “I was just there painting and I created this thing,” she says. “Now people are saying it’s going to go down in Stampede history. It’s surreal.” Inspired by movement and tradition Loepp’s winning piece, titled When the Grass Dances, was inspired by her visit to the Elbow River Camp during the Stampede’s opening ceremonies. She was moved by the energy of the powwow and the beauty of traditional grass dancing. She collaborated closely with her subject, dancer Tyrone Sitting Eagle, to authentically portray his movement and cultural heritage. “Collaborating with Tyrone was one of the greatest gifts I’ve had in my artistic career so far,” Loepp says. “His family was so kind, and seeing their emotional reaction to the finished piece was something I’ll never forget.” Representing Indigenous art at the Stampede The painting celebrates First Nations representation and the art forms central to the Stampede’s cultural history. Loepp says she wanted to create something that would spark curiosity and conversation. “I hope people feel curious, not just about First Nations art, but about anything unfamiliar,” she says. “Curiosity is the first step toward understanding.” From Steinbach roots to national recognition Loepp credits her small-town upbringing for helping her develop her creativity. “Living in the country, I spent a lot of time drawing and painting. That’s just what I did,” she recalls. “You can do a lot, even coming from a small place like Steinbach.” She also shared a heartfelt thank-you to her former art teacher at Niverville High School. “Mr. Clark, if you’re listening... I won,” she says. “I’ll never forget how you encouraged my creativity.” Advice for young artists To aspiring artists in Steinbach and beyond, Loepp offers simple advice: “Just don’t stop. Find what you love, keep practicing, and say yes to every opportunity. Hard work really can pay off.” -With files from Carly Koop.
