Zone 13 champions Brianna Cullen of Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour and Zane Brandt of Steinbach Christian School begin their quest for a Provincial High School Curling Championship banner Thursday at the Winkler and Morden Curling Clubs.

Brandt along with third Cyrus Brandt, second Adrian Petkau and lead Ian Penner won the school’s first Zone championship banner since their coach Cole Peters represented Zone 13 at the Provincials in Swan Lake & Pilot Mound in 2012.

“We’re actually really tight-knit,” said the Steinbach Christian skip. “We play a lot of sports together. We’ve known each other for a little while now and we have a really good chemistry I would say. We’re friends inside and outside of school. It’s just great and I have a lot of fun with these guys.”

“Me and my brother Cyrus have actually played a little while. We had to do a couple of practices with Adrian and Ian just to figure out releases and figure out the ice. Our coach helped us a lot with strategy and helping each other learn the game more. It’s been a lot of fun.”

The Flames foursome will play on the opening draw Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Morden Curling Club against Nolan Hadway of Dauphin.

“Just have a lot of fun,” answered Brandt when asked what the game plan is for the Provincials. “Hopefully have some tight games and maybe win a few. Just have a lot of fun with these guys.

Brianna Cullen, third Sammi Kaluzny, second Julia Millan and lead Morgan Maguet will play their first game Thursday at noon at the Winkler Curling Club against Lauren Nichols of Oak Park.

Cullen says the team is looking forward to the next few days.

“We’re excited. It’s the game we love to play and couldn’t be happier to be going to provincials as a team and working together.”

Cullen, Kaluzny and Millan were on the Barons team that captured the Provincials last year in Dauphin.

Kathryn Cullen threw the last two rocks and won the championship in her grade 12 year.

Brianna Cullen, who played third in 2017, is skipping the team this year following in her sisters footsteps.

“It’s a little more pressure with calling the game but it’s not too bad. I’ve got a great team ahead of me and they’re super helpful when it comes to my rocks.”

Cullen says their strategy is pretty basic.

“Have fun and work together and talk lots. Just work as a team and enjoy our time there.”
