A spokesperson for the Mitchell Local Urban District committee says Centre Street South will be rebuilt this year from Highway 52 to McKenzie Avenue.

Dick Penner notes the asphalt along that road had been breaking up every spring, so a couple of years ago they turned it into a gravel road. As a result, that road gets very dusty and Penner says area residents have been asking for a fix.

The project is expected to cost about $533,000. The Mitchell LUD will contribute $353,000 and the RM of Hanover will chip in the rest.

Penner explains rebuilding Centre Street South had been on their five year plan. However, half the mile was supposed to be done by the Mitchell LUD and the other half by the RM of Hanover. But Penner says when the RM of Hanover announced it was doing its portion in 2018, the LUD of Mitchell decided to do the same.

Not only is the road being rebuilt, but Penner says the road will be lowered and widened and they will also add a turning lane for traffic approaching Highway 52 from the south.

"It will just make traffic flow a little quicker I think," he says.

The LUD of Mitchell will have a budget in 2018 worth $558,000, which is up from $471,000 in 2017. Penner says they are raising the mil rate by .125 mils, which means an average home assessed at $250,000 should see their taxes go up by about $14.
