A farmer in the Niverville area says it has been a great start to the crop year. Ken Krahn says planting of their 3,000 acres of wheat, canola, corn and soybeans was pretty much seamless.

"We started seeding earlier in May and we finished all of our acres without getting any rain in between there except for about 100 acres. So we got it all in early and most of it is coming up now. We are grateful that we've had a good start."

Krahn adds they received 13 millimetres of the rain over the weekend along with about seven millimetres last week so there is good moisture for germination along with plenty of subsoil moisture.

"Most of our corn is starting to emerge now. The beans have not quite popped through the ground yet but, with the moisture that we've had in the past week, that should come here shortly. We sprayed Round-Up before the crops had emerged so the weeds have been taken care of as well so it looks like a good season in front of us here."

Krahn says with the uninterrupted seeding this spring, their wheat and canola will be ready to combine around the same time which will make for a busy harvest but he expects that won't be a problem.
