The Rural Municipality of Hanover has announced changes to this year's compost depots.

Lisa Baldwin, Manager of Recreation and Community Services says starting May 22nd, depots will be held Mondays in New Bothwell, Tuesdays in Blumenort, Wednesdays in Kleefeld, Thursdays in Mitchell and Fridays in Grunthal.

Baldwin says they analyzed the results from last year's depots to determine how much was collected each month. She notes because there wasn't a lot of material that came in during July and August, they have decided not to hold depots during those months in 2017. Further to that, there will be no Saturday depots until October.

"October was our heaviest month," she says. "For October we're going to have four Saturday depots again in Kleefeld and Mitchell."

Even though they are wiping out two months of depots, Baldwin says they will still be holding more collection days this year than last. In 2016 they collected nearly 40 tonnes at 38 depots. Baldwin says they have 52 depots scheduled for 2017.

And Baldwin says residents who want to drop off their material on a weekday when the compost trailer is not in their community, can gladly bring it to the community that is hosting it that day.

According to Baldwin, it costs about $15,000 to run this service for the year. She notes there are transportation costs, processing fees and then staff to pay. Baldwin says the material is delivered to Overton Environmental Enterprises near Giroux. Because they process high-quality organic materials, Baldwin says they staff their depots to make sure what is dropped off does not contaminate the load.

"If it gets contaminated at all then we become a garbage service where the materials we have to take to the garbage and we have to pay for that because it's garbage now," she says.

Baldwin invites residents to bring weeds without seeds, grass clippings, leaves, garden waste and small twigs to the depots.
