The Rural Municipality of Hanover will be expanding its garbage and recycling service on January 1st.

Currently, there is pickup in each urban centre of Hanover as well as some areas south of Mitchell. Reeve Stan Toews says they are expanding, to include Roseville Drive, which is southeast of Kleefeld and Shady Lane which is north of Grunthal.

Toews notes there were no objections from ratepayers at a public hearing in October. The Municipal Board has now given approval.

The municipality has been charging $155 per residence for each of the last three years. Ratepayers could see the cost rise to as much as $155.11 for 2019, $158.21 for 2020, $161.38 for 2021, $164.60 for 2022 and $167.90 for 2023.

He notes the municipality only charges what the service costs. Therefore, if the costs to the municipality do not increase, the cost to ratepayers will not either. Further to that, he says if there is no home on a lot, or the house is vacant, it will not cost the ratepayer.

Toews says he expects the service to grow to include additional rural residential areas in the future.
