As many people around the province brace for the upcoming winter storm, charitable organizations are getting ready for an increase in those needing help to get through.

Executive Director of Steinbach Family Resource Centre Jo-Anne Dalton says the community is always ready and willing to step up.

"We get a lot of calls in these situations from people asking what we need," she says. "A lot of people don't realize that between paychecks, it can be really difficult for some families to go out and get the essentials to get them through a stretch without power or without the ability to go get groceries. Some may not even be able to get to the charity that has been helping them through the season."

Dalton adds some key items that are needed.

"Diapers. Diapers are the number one thing people stop by for when they're in between the regular income they are getting because they can go so quick, you just never know how many you'll need," Dalton says. "If someone has the ability to pick up an extra pack of diapers or wipes, baby food, or formula. That kind of thing. Even a couple of extra non-perishable food items, pick them up and drop them off at your local food bank. You have no idea how big of a difference that can make."

Joy Neufeld from Soups On says they are working twice as hard to have meals available to help people through the next couple of days if needed.

"We are sending out some extra things, on top of our normal in-person dinner day," Neufeld says. "We try to always be prepared for an increase in numbers. With that being said, we do have some meals in our freezer that are ready to go. It's good to take home. We try to be prepared for anything and we'll fly with that."
