The City of Steinbach plans to spend $810,000 next year to upgrade Mckenzie Avenue between Highway #12 and Lilac Bay. City councillor Michael Zwaagstra this week moved approval of a Local Improvement plan for the project. He explains what the project entails.

"We know that Mckenzie is a very busy street and the section that will be re-paved goes from Lilac Bay up to Highway #12. The asphalt will be replaced by concrete. We're hoping that will improve the street and expand its life span significantly. We know that there's a lot of traffic that takes place there, including a lot of heavy traffic, so it's important that we move ahead with this project."

The Local Improvement plan will see the city borrow $500,000 to be repaid over five years. Zwaagstra says the remaining money will come from a $216,000 contribution from a benefitting property owner and $94,000 from the city's Capital Development Reserve Fund.
