Providence University College is working on plans for the next few months following the loss of their men's dormitory Thursday evening.

Bergen Hall caught fire early Thursday evening and is a complete loss. Cherry Wiebe is the Vice-President for Marketing and Communications. She says the Office of the Fire Commissioner is still investigating the cause of the fire. She notes the Providence cabinet held an emergency meeting Friday morning.

"Our cabinet here at Providence has met, trying to create an initial communication plan as well as a plan for our insurance providers and our next steps here. We have got a host of meetings going on. We have just created a plan for immediate housing. We have got some events going on throughout the summer and we are able to accommodate the events so there won't be any changes for this summer."

Providence College provides food for firefighters following the Bergen Hall FireWiebe says a process is already in place that will see the development of their long-term housing needs. She notes nothing is concrete at this point but they are confident that they will be able to find appropriate housing for students come September.

"The plan is obviously to find a longer term solution to our men's residence. That will be in effect very shortly and we may not have something for September that is our final solution but we definitely have lots of ideas in place already for temporary housing in the meantime as we rebuild."

Wiebe says Providence would like to thank community members and the many firefighters who helped put out the blaze. She notes support from the community, students, and alumni has been very encouraging.

"We have a large alumni base and it has been encouraging to see on social media the comments coming in, lots of memories and nostalgia about the building itself and the events that happened within the walls. It is a really interesting time right now to hear from a lot of people that maybe we haven't heard from in a while and we definitely want to encourage that."

Wiebe says above all they are grateful to God that there were no injuries.
