The City of Steinbach starts its summer construction season Tuesday at two locations. Phil Kalyta, the city's head engineer, says one of the projects is a continuation from last year.

"The crews are going to be starting in the Meadows area, on Giesbrecht and Clover Bay, getting the asphalt overlays started. Crews will be working in there getting concrete repairs done and then, within a couple of weeks, moving on with the asphalt grinding and the asphalt paving."

Watermain replacement begins today on Oak CrescentKalyta says the other project starting today is replacement of the water main beneath Oak Crescent. He notes water service will be maintained to all homes during the project and residents of that street will continue to have access to their homes.

"The major disturbance is only on one side of the street and, before we do that, we hook up a temporary hose line to each house, an above ground hose line, where we connect to each house so they're never really out of water."

The half of the street that will be dug up will get a new asphalt surface at the end of the project. Kalyta says water main renewal on Wilson Street from Goosen to Kroeker Avenues will start next week. He notes the contractors are planning to complete their projects in Steinbach quite quickly this year.

"The contractors are very ambitious. They want to get in and put their full crews to it. I guess there's not a lot of work elsewhere in the province or in Winnipeg so they're very anxious to get in and get the work done."
