The City of Steinbach has received two Community Places grants from the province but has been turned down on a third application. The projects that did get money are the new clubhouse building that was recently completed at the soccer park which received $35,000 and the proposed BMX bike track in A.D. Penner Park which received $10,000. Mayor Chris Goertzen says the bike track has been on the radar for awhile.

"It's something that we've talked about over the last year. We have set some funding aside for it and now to get this extra $10,000 is going to be a bonus. We'll be able to do this in quick order come September."

He adds the total cost of that project is about $35-40,000.

The grant that was denied was for an upgrade of the playground in the community park along Poplar Crescent. Goertzen explains what will happen with that project.

"That will be put in the queue for playground improvements in the coming years that will be funded out of general revenues. A few years back, council put $25,000 aside for every year to improve parks around Steinbach. We've slowly been working at it. Each park will get some improvements for safety as well as for added attractions. That one will be put as part of that list."
