The City of Steinbach has found a new way to decorate Main Street by using hockey sticks and skates.

With Rogers Hometown Hockey coming to Steinbach in just over a month, the city is looking for ways to inspire people to show their community hockey spirit. Crews were out hanging sticks and skates on light posts down Main Street Tuesday afternoon as part of the 'Painting the Town Red' campaign.

The city says residents, organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate by displaying lots of red in the front windows of their homes or buildings.

The sticks and skates were all donated for the initiative and afterward, the city says they will be donated to local charities.

Rogers Hometown Hockey is a weekend of free outdoor hockey festivities with live music and entertainment. The weekend wraps up with an outdoor viewing party of a Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals game hosted by Ron MacLean and Tara Slone.

The event takes place March 9 and 10 at the T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach.
