Snow clearing efforts have started in the Rural Municipality of Hanover.

Wes Fehr is Manager of Works and Operations. He notes the municipality received about five centimetres of snow Monday night and into Tuesday morning, which is less than they had expected. However, he notes the gusty wind has really blown that snow around, resulting in a couple of days worth of cleanup.

According to Fehr, the municipality was intentional in keeping snowplows off the roads Tuesday morning.

"That's simply due to visibility factor," he explains. "We didn't want to put equipment out there when visibility was quite low and would create hazards on the roadways."

Fehr says there are spots in the municipality where snow tends to pile up on roadways in blustery weather. He notes these were some of the first locations targeted by snowplows on Tuesday afternoon. Fehr says crews will be reassessing their rural roads again on Wednesday.

As for the communities in Hanover, Fehr says streets are not plugged with a lot of snow right now. He notes this is allowing them to get a later start on snow clearing. Grunthal, which is cleared by a contractor will be targeted Tuesday evening. Then Wednesday morning they will clear the streets in Blumenort, Kleefeld and New Bothwell. Fehr says they will begin clearing Mitchell on Wednesday but will probably complete most of that community on Thursday.

He notes the schedule for snow clearing in these five communities also allows them to work around garbage collection day.

Having said that, Fehr notes if there are any communities where streets are plugged, they will address those quickly. However, he says for the most part, it looks like everything is passable.

Meanwhile, Fehr asks motorists to refrain from parking their vehicles or trailers on streets while snowplows are present in that community.
