Leaf rust has been reported in some spring wheat crops in our province. Canadian Wheat Board agronomist Mike Grenier says the appearance of the disease is a couple of weeks earlier than usual. With the disease beginning to appear, growers need to consider applying a fungicide if necessary. Grenier stresses in a year where input costs are top of mind, producers need to remember fungicides protect yield, not build it. He says farmers targeting a specific yield relative to their fertilizer program, need to factor that in as to whether an application will payback. |
