A home on Poplar Crescent in Steinbach now has a book exchange system call the Little Free Library.

Joyce and Lou Reimer set up the Steinbach's first Little Free Library on their front yard. It resembles a large mail box filled with books. Joyce Reimer says anyone can stop by and enjoy the library.

“It is take a book and give a book. I am hoping that it will be a bit of a book exchange. I stocked it, I didn't have any kids books so I went to MCC and I stocked it with a bunch of books for the young kids, as well as some of my own books. I am hoping that some people in the neighbourhood will bring some new ones.”

Reimer says Little Free Library is a global initiative and you can find every registered little library online. She notes she got the idea for the project on a trip to Minneapolis.

“My sister lives in Minneapolis and we were touring around and saw a bunch of them there, and it just struck me. I love to garden and it just seemed like a cool thing to gather the neighbourhood together.”

Reimer says her husband Lou built the library and she painted it. She notes it has already gotten some use.

“My husband just put it up and fifteen minutes later there were two little kids, our first little guests. It is really really exciting and I am hoping other people catch on to it. It is sort of a nice summer thing for us.”
