It will be about two-and-a-half weeks until Mckenzie Avenue in Steinbach is re-opened between Highway #12 and Lilac Bay. It has been closed since May 7th as a construction crew tore up the asphalt roadway and is now replacing it with concrete to accommodate heavy loads in and out of Barkman Concrete. Phil Kalyta, the city's head engineer, says the final concrete pours are underway on the eastern half of that block.

"I believe the south side lanes were poured yesterday (Tuesday) and I think they're going to pave the north side lanes today (Wednesday) with the large paver and then finish up with handwork over the next week or so."

Kalyta says the project is on schedule for completion by mid-July.

Meanwhile, he says the city's other summer projects are largely completed. Re-paving of Hespeler Street was finished a couple of weeks ago and new sidewalks have been poured in the Hampton and Parkhill neighbourhoods with landscaping to wrap up in a week or two.

Kalyta says it paid off again this year for the city to tender its contracts early.

"Again, we got them out early and the contractors didn't have much work early, so we got their full focus in May. That's always nice, the city tries to tender things early and it usually works out very well and the contractors appreciate it."
