The latest Census data shows that nearly two-thirds of Steinbach residents reported English as their mother tongue.

According to Statistics Canada, there are 11,305 residents in Steinbach for whom English is the language they grew up speaking from childhood. That works out to 64.2 per cent, up from 62.3 per cent in the 2016 Census.

  • English - 11,305 residents
  • German - 1,675 residents
  • Plautdietsch - 1,105 residents
  • Tagalog - 930 residents
  • French - 300 residents
  • Punjabi (Panjabi) - 260 residents
  • Russian - 200 residents
  • Low German - 185 residents
  • Ukrainian - 135 residents
  • Spanish - 125 residents
  • Gujarati - 90 residents
  • Cebuano - 55 residents
  • Arabic - 40 residents
  • Vietnamese - 40 residents
  • Ilocano - 40 residents

Meanwhile, in the Rural Municipality of Hanover, most recent data shows 62.1 per cent of residents identify English as their mother tongue, compared to 58.6 per cent in the 2016 Census.

  • English - 10,675 residents
  • German - 3,210 residents
  • Plautdietsch - 1,320 residents
  • Low German - 350 residents
