Map showing detour.McKenzie Avenue from Highway #12 to Lilac Bay in Steinbach will be closed for about two months starting Monday.

Phil Kalyta, the city head engineer, says a contractor is moving in to start tearing up the asphalt roadway so it can be rebuilt with concrete. He explains why they are closing the whole block instead of doing one side at a time.

"In order to do the work efficiently, we're going to have to close the entire block. We are doing it in two phases so we can keep local access open to both the cemetery and Barkman Concrete. But all through traffic, as of Monday, will be closed. We are anticipating it's going to be completed in early July. So, in order to get the work done and minimize the inconvenience, we have to totally close it down. Otherwise, it probably would have taken right until October."

Kalyta says the designated detour will be on Reimer Avenue and Giesbrecht Street.

The sidewalk on the south side of McKenzie will remain open throughout construction as will access to Memorial Cemetery.

The project will cost $810,000.
