Hundreds of people attended the Remembrance Day service at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre in Steinbach Sunday morning. The main auditorium was overflowing, with people standing along the walls and cadets bringing in extra chairs moments before the service began.

There was a special focus on World War 1 as this November 11th is the 100th anniversary since the signing of the armistice that ended the war.

The service began with an introduction from Emcee Comrade Bill Richards and continued with the March on of the Colours, Two Minutes of Silence, and scripture and meditation from pastor and actor Marc Moir. Moir, who is known for his successful stage show "Padre X" which tells the story of Victoria Cross recipient and army chaplain John Weir Foote, reflected on the importance of not just remembering those who have fallen but also engaging in and commemorating their sacrifices.

"It's up to all of us to remember and to keep their stories alive. To gather on Remembrance Day, to wear a poppy, read a book, see a play, have a conversation with your children or grandchildren. And by doing so, you can not only tell their story; but also in a small way, live it. And in a small way; bring peace to the memory and the souls of those who have fallen for us."

Wreaths were laid by representatives from various community organizations including RCMP, Steinbach Fire Fighters and Legion Members, along with MP Ted Falk, MLA Kelvin Geortzen, and Mayor Earl Funk.
