The Chief Executive Officer for HavenGroup says even though there has never been a fire at Rest Haven, it's better to be safe than sorry.

David Driedger made the comment in response to Manitoba Health announcing the nursing home in Steinbach will be getting a sprinkler system installed.

"That had been a priority matter for us for a number of years and we're pleased that they now found it appropriate to approve it," notes Driedger.

He calls it a significant upgrade, noting each of the key areas of the facility will be receiving a sprinkler source, as well as every one of the resident rooms.

"Obviously we've lived without a fire sprinkler system over the years," notes Driedger. "We're very appreciative that we have a very responsive fire department here and therefore those concerns are somewhat alleviated. However, it is best to have the fire sprinkler system right at source so that damage and safety overall is minimized."

Driedger says a tender has not yet been awarded. He notes this project will go through a series of phases to determine the best way to install the system, while creating the least amount of impact on residents. Driedger expects the work will take place in fall.

Driedger says when Rest Haven was built in 1984, a sprinkler system was not needed. He notes because independent living facilities do not require sprinklers, Rest Haven will be the only facility under the HavenGroup umbrella that will be getting the system.
