The City of Steinbach is considering giving names to all of the roads that were annexed from the RM of Hanover effective January 1st this year. Canada Post has informed the city it will be changing that area over to the community mailbox system by this fall and has urged the city to make any changes in road names by that time.

Steinbach Chief Administrative Officer Troy Warkentin says many of the roads in the annexed area were changed over by the RM of Hanover a few years ago from named roads to

Newly annexed areas of Steinbach (in green) will be changed to the community mailbox system and could get new street names.numbered roads. He gives an example.

"Twin Creek Road, I personally still use that term, but that was renamed to the provincial range road numbering system. If there is any intention to either reinstate some of the original names or if there's any intent to extend some of the existing roads within the city that correspond with the new annexation area, it could be dealt with at this point."

Mayor Chris Goertzen says city council has asked the administration to come up with a report and recommendations.

"Council wants the administration to look closely at whether we change them back to their original names or what is best for their safety and also the convenience of the people who live there. We've asked the administration to talk to some people in those areas, talk to the citizens that live there and come up with some suggestions on how to proceed."

Goertzen says since those residents will be going through the inconvenience of an address change, the city wants to do it right the first time.

"It their postal code and address is going to change, let's make sure that we have the right names in place so that it's done once."
