Thursday was a rain-day for many outdoor sporting facilities, including the Steinbach Fly-in Golf course. Imagine the surprise when Rob Fast, Superintendent at the Fly-in received a phone call from one of his greens-keepers this morning.
“We were cutting greens early and we got to our #18 golf green, and somebody had stolen a Steinbach Golf Club cart that had been parked at the back of our facility, actually two of them. They kind of jerry-rigged them and got going. They came over to my #18 golf green and pulled a couple of power turns on top of the turf and a lot of turf was uprooted.”
Damage to the 18th green shows where golf cart tires tore up the turf. Admittedly frustrated, Fast continues, “It’s a real act of vandalism and so there need to be consequences for things like this. A golf green is an expensive piece of business property. It's repairable, but it takes a long time for the whole area to recover. Our golf course was closed yesterday so the carts weren't out, so this would have been a kind of a late evening, early morning type of activity.”
As to whether this will affect the golfer's game today, Fast says, “No. We're going to get on top of this and start fixing it right away. We’ll move the pin and replace the broken flagstick and they will play around it, but it's always sad to see.”
The golf club has alerted the Steinbach RCMP.
