The MHSAA announced this morning that the start of the Provincial A/AA Junior Varsity Basketball championships in Winnipeg have been delayed due to travel conditions. Ross L. Gray of Sprague girls along with Gabrielle Roy and Green Valley boys will be competing at the Provincials.


The Steinbach Pistons five-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday night in Winkler. The defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions fell 3-1 to the Flyers. Jackson Kostiuk had the lone goal for the Pistons. Winkler led 1-0 and 2-0 at the period breaks. Steinbach netminder Cole Plowman made 27 saves. The East Division leading Pistons are six points ahead of the second place Flyers. Winkler has six games left and Steinbach has four.


Game one of the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League’s best-of-five semifinal between the Eastman Selects and Westman Wildcats scheduled for Wednesday night in Hartney was postponed and rescheduled to Thursday night.


The Brandon Wheat Kings losing streak has reached five games. Oliver Tulk scored the tying goal on the power play with 46 seconds left in regulation and then potted the winner 33 seconds into overtime to lift the Calgary Hitmen past Brandon 3-2. Jayden Wiens and Nolan Flamand scored in regulation for the Wheat Kings.


Jeffrey Viel scored the go-ahead goal at 17:08 of the third period as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 5-4. Jeff Malott had a hat trick for the Moose while Brad Lambert chipped in with a goal and two helpers.


Toronto and Montreal were winners in the PWHL Wednesday night. Brandon’s Kristen Campbell made 22 saves in Toronto’s 3-1 victory over Boston. Marie-Philip Poulin had a goal and an assist as Montreal shaded New York 4-3. Elm Creek’s Corinne Schroeder made 27 saves in net for New York.


The round robin ends today at the Brier in Regina. Reid Carruthers has a 5-1 record and is tied for top spot in Pool A with Trevor Bonot of Northern Ontario and Brendan Bottcher of Alberta. Matt Dunstone is 4-2. Mike McEwen of Saskatchewan tops Pool B with a 6-1 record. Defending champion Brad Gushue and Tyler Smith of Prince Edward Island are 5-2. The top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.
