Steinbach's operations department has big plans for 2022 including the expansion of the landfill.

Senior Operations Manager Paul Penner presented the department's plans to council at a Strategic Priorities Committee meeting earlier this week.

"We are working on a number of projects, we are doing a future operations expansion, we are doing a landfill cell expansion and we are doing a landfill shop and a number of other small projects."

Penner says they plan to go to tender for the phase 2 landfill expansion in the next few months.

Mayor Earl Funk notes this is an important step forward for Steinbach and the surrounding area.

"The landfill expansion that we are planning this year will give us 14-15 years and then down the road the next expansion will give us another 25 so that is giving us 35 to 40 years on our landfill."

Penner says the particularly harsh winter we just came through exposed some weaknesses and a three-bay truck shop at the landfill will fix a lot of those issues.

In addition, Penner notes the expansion of the operations yard on Millwork Drive is very important as they have outgrown the current space.

As Steinbach continues to grow, Funk says the operations department needs to keep up.

"They are not the projects that everyone sees all the time but yet they are projects that help us get the work done in our community."
