Tuesday is the tax deadline for ratepayers in the Rural Municipality of Hanover. But, a spokesperson says he expects less foot traffic this year as the result of more people paying their taxes through online banking.

Derek Decru is Acting Chief Financial Officer for Hanover. He says the deadline to pay taxes is October 31st at 4 pm. He notes by now anyone wanting to pay online should have done so already, to ensure the funds are transferred on time.

Hanover will be collecting just over $19.2 million this year, which includes school taxes. He says historically between 82% and 85% comes in by the deadline. Decru says the expectation is that by Wednesday, there will still be $2.5 million left to collect.

For those who miss the deadline, a penalty of 1.25 percent will be charged on the first day of every month that it's late.

Meanwhile, Decru says their pre-authorized payment program is catching on. Currently, about 1 percent of all ratepayers are signed up. Through the program, taxes are divided over the course of the remaining period and that amount is withdrawn from a ratepayer's account automatically on the 15th of each month.

Tuesday is also the tax deadline in the Rural Municipalities of Stuartburn and Morris.
