On Sunday, August 20, the Waterworks Department for the City of Steinbach received notification that there was a water main break on Third Street between Reimer Avenue and Lumber Avenue.

They attended the site, dealt with the leak, and isolated the area.

Mike Heppner, Waterworks Manager for the City of Steinbach, says in the process of notifying and talking to the residents, there was a couple of them that made mention of natural gas odor.

“They were asking whether they could be combined, and they weren't combined, but we investigated that a little bit further and there was a vacant house there, that by from what I understand, had a gas leak inside that was dealt with by the fire department and ambulance, and so on.”

Once fire and ambulance crews arrived on site and took over the scene, waterworks had finished their portion of the water main preparation and left the site.

The Waterworks Department is still currently at work on Third Street, and the road is closed between Reimer Avenue and Lumber Avenue.

“The water main repair is complete, we're backfilling right now. I'm not aware of the status of the gas leak, I presume it was fixed, they wouldn't have left the site if it had not been.”
