Because early detection saved her life, a woman from the Steinbach area is spreading the word on the importance of breast cancer screening.

Audrey Goertzen

Along with her co-workers, Audrey Goertzen made an appointment at the CancerCare mobile breast screening clinic in Steinbach a few years ago and was surprised when she got the call. "They opened up an extra day because there were so many people calling in. I made an appointment, and I never thought I would get the call saying I had cancer."

Goertzen says she had no reason to get checked aside from her age, and the fact that her coworkers had made their appointments. If the mobile clinic had not come to Steinbach, she says she probably would not have gone to Winnipeg for screening.

"First of all, not one person could feel a lump. The surgeon said she was so surprised a mammogram caught this cancer as early as it did. I guess they usually catch it when people go in too late."

Goertzen says it only took a few minutes, and with a mobile clinic in Steinbach, it was a fairly easy process. Because it was caught early, Goertzen was able to have the cancer surgically removed, without having chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Goertzen notes, "Early detection is the key, it's such a simple process and it saved my life."

Spokesperson Judy Edmond, says due to mechanical issues with the mobile unit, the December clinic scheduled for Steinbach had to be postponed. She notes, because of that there was a long waiting list, and no more appointments can be made for Steinbach at this time.
