Less than a week after opening to the public, the new entrance at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach is now without elevator service.

"Unfortunately we have had a malfunction in the elevator motor," says Ken Klassen, Vice President of Finance and Capital with Southern Health-Santé Sud. "So the elevator in the new entrance is down."

Klassen says the malfunction happened earlier this week. It resulted in an individual being trapped inside for a brief period of time.

According to Klassen, this isn't a quick fix and because the cost is covered under warranty, they have called the manufacturer to make the repairs.

"We're hoping that it is all fixed by next week," explains Klassen. "And that the elevator will be back functioning by then."

Klassen stresses the new entrance off Henry Street is still open to the public. However, anyone requiring elevator service will need to enter through the CancerCare facility.

A ribbon cutting ceremony had been planned for January 19th to officially open the front entrance. Klassen says that opening has now been postponed. A new date has not been announced.
