The Deadhorse Creek in Morden has spilled its banks as of Saturday morning, with water overflowing onto several streets throughout the city.

City Manager Nicole Reidle says water is over top of the Parkhill Drive bridge, and that area of town is not passable at this time. Meanwhile, the Alvey Street bridge has been completely washed out due to the rushing floodwaters of the Deadhorse Creek.

Reidle stresses many streets in the community are becoming impassable and is urging residents to be aware of how deep the water is, because it can be deceiving. In general, currently, City officials are asking residents to avoid all travel around Morden.

Mayor Brandon Burley spoke briefly on social media this afternoon to reinforce the need for people to stay off the roads and away from flooded areas, and not to go through barricades as crews are working hard in these areas to keep homes and people safe. He added a request for people to listen to all emergency personnel and obey all evacuation requests.

Burley assured all hands available are on deck.

“We are not sure right now when this is going to end. There is substantial rainfall in the forecast and so we may not be through the worst of it yet. We do ask that you keep a very close eye on the official response from the City of Morden.”

He took time to recognize the collaborative efforts going into the flood relief efforts.

“I want to thank our city staff for their hard work today, emergency personnel, our volunteer fire department are out sandbagging, so many volunteers are both filling bags and sandbagging.

I also want to thank the City of Winkler who have provided public works and operational staff for our response, as well as a number of small businesses that have provided vehicles, resources, and staff to help with the delivery of sandbags.”
