Numerous highways in southern Manitoba are closed this morning as the result of an Alberta Clipper tearing through our province.

The system is bringing snow and strong northwest winds gusting to 70-90 kilometres per hour. The falling snow and strong winds have combined to reduce visibility to near-zero in blowing snow. Southern Manitoba remains under a Blizzard Warning. According to Environment Canada, conditions will improve throughout Tuesday morning from west to east as the winds diminish.

Highway closures in the southeast include:

  • Highway 1 from the Manitoba/ Saskatchewan border to Prawda
  • Highway 12 from Ste. Anne to the Canada/ United States border
  • Highway 52 from Highway 59 to Mitchell
  • Highway 59 from Winnipeg to south of Highway 23
  • Highway 75 from Winnipeg to Morris

Dave was attempting to drive down Highway 59 near St. Pierre this morning. He referred to the conditions as invisible.

"There were two vehicles in the ditch in the first kilometre just outside of town," says Dave. "And you can not see...at all."

Ashley was driving near Carey this morning. She says it is a complete whiteout.

"I can see the end of my hood," she says. "I know there is a vehicle in front of me because when I got out to see if I was on the road or not I saw their four-ways but I can not even see the stop sign beside me."

Ashley says this morning's drive is a combination of icy conditions and zero visibility.

"Where you can see it's icy and where you can't see, you can't see and it's icy," she adds.

Shortly before 6:30 am, Gabe Sorochuk says he pulled onto a side road, off of Greenland Road.

"I was already on the road before five o'clock and I couldn't see nothing," says Sorochuk. "So I'm not taking a chance. I'll just wait a little bit just to add more visibility."

Cam McGavin says he was driving approximately 25 kilometres per hour on Highway 52 around 6:30 am. He notes he had a couple cars following him, but other than that, there were not many vehicles out on the highway.
